The rapid adoption of these technologies has created a new class of digital doubles capable of generating realistic performances, raising fundamental questions about labor displacement and the future of creative production in one of the world’s largest media markets.

The displacement is concentrated in the web drama sector, a vast and commercially significant segment of Chinese entertainment that produces short-form serialized content for streaming platforms. These productions have historically relied on a large pool of lower-tier performers, many of whom are now finding themselves without roles. The new AI tools can generate full scenes, complete with character movements, facial expressions, and dialogue, requiring only a script and a director’s instructions. Screenwriters, directors, and producers retain their roles, but the performer, once a necessary intermediary between script and audience, becomes optional.
