The consensus is that the router has merely evolved into a passive security device, a digital watchdog that barks only when a visitor strays too close to the front door. This framing is structurally incomplete. What Comcast has activated is not a motion detector in any traditional sense, but a millimeter-wave radar system operating under the guise of a router firmware update. The router is now a constant, active scanner of the physical environment, measuring the Doppler shift of radio waves bouncing off human bodies as they move through rooms. On paper, this is a marvel of signal processing. In practice, it transforms every subscribing household into a data-emitting node in a proprietary surveillance grid. The financial mechanics of this are straightforward: Comcast does not sell this feature for a monthly fee. It gives it away for free. The balance sheet implication is unambiguous. The monetization is not on the front end. It is on the back end, in the form of behavioral data profiles, granular movement patterns, and the attendant reduction of churn that comes from embedding the service so deeply into the physical routines of the subscriber that leaving becomes a logistical nightmare. The macro pivot here is not about privacy in the abstract sense. It is about the systemic concentration of ambient sensing infrastructure. Linksys tried this and abandoned the project. Wiz hedged its bet with a specific lighting form factor. Philips Hue chose the narrower Zigbee protocol. Comcast is pushing this capability into millions of gateways simultaneously, creating the largest single-operator occupancy-sensing network in the United States. The risks are not merely hypothetical. A data breach or a subpoena-driven disclosure of movement logs from such a dataset would provide a real-time map of human activity across entire metropolitan corridors. The insurance industry, law enforcement, and credit scoring algorithms are already circling this kind of granular data. The threshold for what constitutes reasonable expectation of privacy is being lowered not by a court ruling, but by a router default setting. The existential question that the smart home evangelists refuse to ask is this: When every residential gateway in the country becomes a passive radar station for the landlord of the digital infrastructure, what happens to the distinction between a home and a node in a privately owned behavioral database?
