GMO Coin May Freeze Bitcoin Services for eCash Snapshot

Japanese crypto exchange GMO Coin may suspend several Bitcoin services when the eCash network takes its first balance snapshot at block 963,648, expected around midnight Japan time on August 23. The potential freeze, which could affect spot trading, leveraged products, deposits, and withdrawals, puts Bitcoin holders in an unusual position: they face a decision point without a confirmed shutdown or clear timeline from the exchange.

eCash is a new Bitcoin-derived chain that plans to credit holders with a separate asset called ECX. The project’s live roadmap now describes this weekend’s event as an Alpha stage that will issue practice ECX, with a Beta stage scheduled around September 20 and the mainnet launch planned for around October 31. Permanent ECX tokens will only arrive at the mainnet snapshot, and practice units can be burned to redeem the permanent asset. This staging differs from eCash’s integration guide, updated August 11, which still calls block 963,648 the fork point and describes a 1:1 ECX credit there, though the guide labels itself pre-launch.

The technical risks underlying GMO Coin’s warning are structural rather than hypothetical. eCash uses the same address formats as Bitcoin, while replay protection is opt-in. That combination creates transfer risks, as transactions intended for one chain could be valid on the other. GMO also warned that thin liquidity and volatility could widen spreads, contribute to margin calls and forced sales, and that early chain instability could lead to transaction reversals. ECX is separate from the existing XEC asset and from BIP-110, a different Bitcoin soft-fork proposal whose timeline uses nearby block heights.

The gap between the project’s stated rollout and the exchange’s preparedness highlights a recurring challenge in cryptocurrency markets: chain splits create asymmetric risks for holders. The exchange has not said whether the Alpha snapshot will trigger a pause or how long any interruption could last. Customers must decide whether to preemptively move funds or accept the uncertainty. GMO and eCash both state that the ECX chain does not alter users’ existing Bitcoin, but that assurance does not address operational risk during the transition window.

For professional market participants, the episode underscores the importance of exchange-specific due diligence ahead of scheduled network events. The eCash roadmap is clear about its three-stage approach, but GMO’s response remains conditional, and its next notice will determine whether customers face an actual interruption and provide the missing start and end times. Until then, block 963,648 is a live planning point rather than a confirmed freeze, and holders are left to weigh the costs of inaction against those of an unnecessary move.
