The prevailing consensus among the developer class is that code hosting is “boring infrastructure.” For eighteen years, the decision of where to park a repository has been a non-decision: a default solved by GitHub’s network effects and Microsoft’s balance sheet. That consensus is now a liability. The launch of Origin by Cursor-a hosting platform built into an AI coding environment-arrived precisely as a six-hour-and-forty-two-minute GitHub outage demonstrated that the “source of truth” has become a single point of failure in the age of AI-generated code. The timing was coincidental; the structural fragility it exposed is not. The plumbing here is deceptively simple. Cursor is not asking engineering organizations to migrate off GitHub. On paper, Origin positions itself as a “low-risk layer” that keeps GitHub as the canonical source of truth. In practice, this is a Trojan horse for a new procurement paradigm. Cursor’s product is an AI coding agent that generates, reviews, and merges code autonomously. The platform is the terminal for those agents. If the hosting layer is also Cursor’s, the entire loop-generation, review, storage, deployment-becomes a closed circuit. The financial mechanics are clear: capture the hosting fees, the compute fees, and the deployment fees (via a Vercel connection), all while selling the illusion of redundancy. The GitHub outage was a perfect stress test: error rates near 20% on pull requests, near 50% on raw file downloads, and a complete collapse of enterprise SSO and Copilot. The developer internet was, structurally speaking, offline. Cursor’s launch day was delayed because GitHub was down. The irony is the feature, not the bug. Zooming out to the macro environment, this is not a story about a startup competing with a monopolist. This is a story about the systemic risk embedded in concentrating the entire software supply chain on a single platform owned by a single trillion-dollar corporation. Microsoft’s GitHub is the de facto backbone of modern development. It hosts the CI/CD pipelines, the issue trackers, the package registries, and-crucially-the training data for the very AI agents that are now being tasked with rewriting that same codebase. When GitHub goes down, the entire generative AI production line stalls. Copilot, which depends on the same API that failed, is a non-starter. Enterprise single sign-on, which is the gatekeeper for organizational access, is a brick. The developer internet did what the developer internet does: it meme-d about it on X while millions of lines of promised productivity evaporated. The moral hazard is not that Microsoft cannot keep GitHub operational; it is that the entire industry has built its future production capacity on a platform whose reliability is measured against a 20% error floor during minor degradation. The existential question that the Origin launch forces onto the table is not whether Cursor can compete with GitHub. The question is whether a financial system increasingly dependent on the continuous, autonomous generation of software code can afford to have that code’s lifecycle controlled by a single entity that also happens to be its largest AI model provider.
